CDC ROADM design tradeoffs due to physical layer impairments in optical networks

چکیده

In this work, we assess the impact of several physical layer impairments (PLIs) on performance optical networks based colorless, directionless and contentionless reconfigurable add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs), through Monte-Carlo simulation, considering polarization division multiplexing 4 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, at 28 GBaud, for 37.5 GHz channels. The PLIs taken into account are amplified spontaneous emission noise, filtering, in-band crosstalk nonlinear interference noise caused by Kerr effect. A detailed model ROADM node is built two typical architectures, broadcast select (B&S) route (R&S), different structures, multicast switches (MCSs) wavelength selective (WSSs), resulting in four scenarios. Our results have shown that 16QAM B&S ROADMs with WSSs-based structures scenario has best relation cost/performance, foreseeing its use metro networks, while 4QAM R&S structure allows a larger cascade an expectable lower cost anticipating implementation long-haul networks.

Study of physical layer impairments in high speed optical networks

The work done in this thesis focuses on the impact of transmission impairments in high speed optical networks. Specifically it focuses on the impact of nonlinear impairments in long haul fiber optic data transmission. Currently deployed fiber optic transmission networks are running on NRZ OOK modulation formats with spectral efficiency of only 1 bit/symbol. To achieve spectral efficiency beyond...

Impact of physical layer impairments on the all-to-all broadcast in wavelength routed optical networks

All-to-all broadcast is to disseminate a unique message from each node to every other node of the network. This paper investigates the impact of some of the physical layer impairments on the optical all-to-all broadcast in linear array, bidirectional ring and hypercube networks. The physical layer impairments include Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise, switch induced crosstalk and demux...

Physical Layer Impairments in the Optimization of the Next-Generation of All-Optical Networks

The Internet traffic is constantly growth and the applications of type unicast/multicast with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The increase of internet traffic over the last couple of years is well known (the rate of increase is reported to be 60% to 100% per year (Malik, 2011). Applications like multicast are used more frequently than ever (for example HDTV, videoconferencing, ...
